We build partnerships with the poorest and most vulnerable people in South Sudan, empowering them to achieve their goals in agriculture, water, and community building.

Our founder

The story of William Kolong Pioth, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan and the founder and Managing Director of PADA, is quite remarkable.  It begins in a small village in the northwestern part of South Sudan, then moves to Ethiopia, then to Kenya, then Canada, then back to the same small village where his life began.

What is PADA?

Pan Aweil Development Agency is a non-profit non-governmental organization based in South Sudan.  We try to put into practice the advice of the late John Garang by working to introduce into villages the facilities and services normally associated with urban centers, and by encouraging villagers to be self-reliant.  Find out what we are doing.

South Sudan

The world's newest state is facing enormous challenges at this time, after five years of strife and turmoil.  A new beginning is needed.  What is happening in South Sudan?  And what can be done?

More about South Sudan

"It is better to bring the town to the people than to bring people to the town."

- the late John garang, leader of south sudan's liberation movement.

SEEDS FOR SURVIVAL

Disruptions caused by political instability make it likely that 2016 will be a year of severe food shortages in South Sudan. PADA is doing its part to help alleviate the problem. It has acquired access to unused land near Aweil. This land is being used to grow 15 metric tonnes of sorghum, the same amount of groundnuts, and several other crops. They will be sold to the World Food Program for distribution to internally displaced persons and returnees from northern Sudan.

What's new

WOMEN'S LIVELIHOOD

From about a dozen women in 2012, this project has grown to include almost all of the roughly 1,000 households in the seven villages of Majok Adim payam (rural district). Not just women but entire families grow vegetables, irrigate their gardens, feed their families and sell the surplus in the market.  This year, we are providing them with more treadle pumps, watering cans, hoes, shovels and wheel barrows.

SPORT FOR PEACE

PADA has organized sports activities to promote harmony between local youths and the many returnees and refugees.  An annual state-wide festival in Aweil features competitions in football, basketball, volleyball, and track events.  Now PADA is negotiating with the Luol Deng Foundation to introduce basketball training programs.  In football, PADA is the sponsor of newly created Pan Aweil United FC, a team registered with the South Sudan Football Association and FIFA.
